How to play blackjack – For beginers

Blackjack is a casino card game where you play against the dealer, and the goal is to get a hand value as close to 21 as possible without going over 21.

  •

Basic rules:

  • If your total goes over 21, you automatically lose.
    This is called a “bust”.

Example:

  • You have 10 + 8 + 5 = 23
  • Since 23 is more than 21, you immediately lose.

How the winner is decided:

  • If your total is 21 or less, your hand is compared to the dealer’s hand.
  • Whoever is closer to 21 wins.

Examples:

  • You: 20
  • Dealer: 18
    You win.
  • You: 17
  • Dealer: 19
    Dealer wins.
  • You: 21
  • Dealer: 20
    You win.

If both have the same total:

  • Nobody wins or loses.
  • This is called a “push”.

Example:

  • You: 18
  • Dealer: 18
    Your bet is returned.

Card values:

  • Cards 2 to 10 are worth their face value.
  • Jack, Queen, and King are worth 10.
  •
  • An Ace can count as:
    • 1 or 11 depending on which value helps your hand more.

Example with an Ace:

  • Ace + 9 = 20
  • Ace + 8 + 9 = 18
The Ace counts as 1 to avoid going over 21.

Best possible hand:

  • An Ace + a 10 value card = 21 with only two cards.
  • This is called a “Blackjack” and it usually pays more than a regular win.

In Blackjack there are 4 main decisions you need to know:

Hit

When you have a low total and want another card.
Example: 5 + 2 = 7, you ask for another card and get a 10, now you have 17.
This is shown by tapping the table with your finger.

Stand

When you do not want any more cards because you think you already have a good total.
Example: you have 17 and there is a high chance the next card would take you over 21.
This is shown by waving your hand above the table.

Double Down

When you want to double your bet and receive only one more card.
You place another bet equal to your original one next to it.
The dealer gives you one final card, usually placed sideways.

Split

When you receive two cards of the same value, you can split them into two separate hands.
Example: two eights.
You place another equal bet and show two fingers.
The dealer separates the cards, and then you play each hand individually.

Important thing in blackjack

If you play at an online casino in New Jersey or another state in United States, it is very useful to understand the basics.

Blackjack on the first hand

If your first two cards are:

  • an Ace + a 10 value card

You automatically get blackjack or 21.

But only if the dealer does not also have blackjack.

In that case, the payout is not the usual 100%, but usually 150%.

Example:

  • You bet $100
  • You get blackjack
  • The dealer does not have blackjack
  • You win $150 profit.

How the dealer works

At the beginning, the dealer has:

  • one face-up card
  • One face-down card.

You can only see one card and must make your decisions based on it.

If the dealer ends up with blackjack:

  • All players without blackjack automatically lose
  • Players who also have blackjack neither win nor lose.

Insurance

If the dealer’s visible card is an Ace, the casino offers you insurance.

This means:

  • You place an additional bet equal to half of your original bet
  • You are betting that the dealer has blackjack.

Example:

  • Main bet = $100
  • Insurance = $50

If the dealer does not have blackjack:

  • You lose the $50 insurance bet.

If the dealer has blackjack:

  • You lose the main bet
  • But the insurance payout is enough to practically recover your lost money.

If you also have blackjack:

  • You keep both your original payout and the insurance.

Many experienced players in American online casinos avoid insurance because the casino has a long-term advantage on that bet.

Surrender

Some casinos offer a feature called Surrender in Blackjack.

This usually happens when you have a difficult hand, for example 16, which is considered a very risky total.
There is a high chance of losing whether you take another card or stay.

In that situation, you can choose to surrender and give up half of your bet instead of risking the entire amount.

Example:

  • You bet $100
  • You choose surrender
  • You get $50 back, and the round ends.

At a real casino table, surrender is usually shown by making a horizontal line from left to right with your right index finger above the table.

There are two main reasons why the casino has an advantage in Blackjack.

  1. The player acts first

This is the biggest advantage the casino has.

Example:

  • You have 12
  • The dealer has 16

According to blackjack rules, 12 is considered a weak hand, and you will often need to take another card.

If you draw a 10 and go over 21, you immediately lose.

At that moment:

  • the casino automatically wins
  • even if the dealer would later go over 21 as well.

This means:

  • if you lose first, the dealer does not even need to finish playing the hand.

That is why casinos win many rounds even when they have weak cards.

Casino wins / player loses = casino wins
Casino loses / player wins = player wins
Casino loses / player loses = casino wins

  1. Most players make mistakes
  1. Many players:
  • Take a card when they should not
  • stand too early
  • use insurance without a good reason
  • play emotionally instead of strategically.

Once you learn the basics of Blackjack, you will already play much better than most beginners.

This means you will:

  • make fewer mistakes
  • better understand when to take a card or stand
  • have a better chance of protecting your money and making a profit.

Over time, through practice, you will learn:

  • basic blackjack strategy
  • How to follow the cards on the table
  • How to manage your bankroll
  • and how to make calm decisions without emotions.

Later, you can also learn more advanced techniques that may give some players a small additional advantage, but for the beginning, the most important thing is to master the basics and play with discipline.
